To prepare an Italian tax return with foreign assets, gather account statements, average and peak balances, investment valuations, ownership shares, holding dates and foreign tax certificates. Your adviser needs these to distinguish reporting obligations from IVIE, IVAFE and income tax. A year-end balance alone is rarely sufficient.
Sources checked: 24 September 2026. The 2026 return normally concerns the 2025 tax year. If you are preparing for a later return, collect that year's records instead and check its instructions when available. Do not mix a 2025 statement with 2026 transactions.
Quick summary
- Reporting is not the same as paying tax. Monitoraggio fiscale records foreign holdings. IVIE, IVAFE and the tax on crypto-assets have their own rules.
- Use the right form. Quadro RW belongs to Redditi PF; Quadro W belongs to the 730. Eligibility to use the 730 is a separate question.
- Two bank-account thresholds serve different purposes. The €15,000 maximum aggregate balance concerns monitoring; the €5,000 average-balance test concerns fixed IVAFE.
- Document the legal entity, not just the app brand. An Italian-language app does not establish where the account is held or how it is taxed.
- Keep income records too. Dividends, interest, rent, sales and foreign withholding are not replaced by an asset-value declaration.
This is a document-preparation checklist, not a recommendation to declare every account regardless of exemptions. First establish your Italian tax residence, any applicable special regime, and which reporting rules apply to your facts.
Understand Quadro RW, Quadro W and the two thresholds
Under article 4 of Decree-Law 167/1990, Italian-resident individuals can have monitoring duties for foreign investments and financial assets. Article 19 of Decree-Law 201/2011 separately provides the asset-tax framework. The same holding can therefore involve reporting without tax, tax as well as reporting, or an exemption requiring supporting evidence.
The Agenzia delle Entrate's Quadro W guidance refers 730 filers to the Quadro RW instructions for the underlying data. The practical collection work is similar whichever return your adviser confirms you should file.
| Question | Rule to distinguish | Document needed |
|---|
| Which section? | RW in Redditi PF; W in the 730 | Confirmation of your return type |
| Can foreign deposits and bank accounts be exempt from monitoring? | The maximum aggregate value reached during the year must not exceed €15,000; the section is still needed if IVAFE is due | Statements supporting the aggregate peak, not only the year-end balance |
| Is fixed IVAFE due on foreign current accounts or savings books? | The combined annual average balance with the same intermediary must exceed €5,000, counting joint interests pro rata | Annual average balances and ownership percentages |
| Does a threshold cover the brokerage portfolio too? | These bank-account tests are not a general exemption for shares, funds, property or crypto | A separate inventory of non-bank assets |
When fixed IVAFE applies to an individual's current account or savings book, the annual reference amount is €34.20 per account, adjusted for ownership share and holding period. It does not turn into 0.20% of the account balance above €5,000. Financial products have different rules.
For the €5,000 test, gather all relevant accounts at the same intermediary, even where an account was held for only part of the year. The instructions require aggregation of the relevant average balances, taking joint ownership into account. Do not assume that keeping each individual account below €5,000 settles the issue.
The €15,000 monitoring exception instead requires the maximum aggregate value of foreign deposits and bank accounts during the tax period. Ask for transaction data when separate peak certificates cannot establish the combined position. Do not add unrelated asset classes to this bank-account exception or substitute an average for a peak.
What to request from each institution
Ask for the exact calendar year, the original currency and downloadable documents you can retain. A screenshot of today's app balance is not an annual statement. Check that exported files identify the account, institution, owner and reporting period.
| Institution or asset | Documents to request | What they establish |
|---|
| Foreign bank | Annual statements, annual average balance, peak balance and dated transaction history if needed | Monitoring test, fixed IVAFE test and reconciliation |
| Bank or payment provider | Legal entity, branch/country, account holders, opening and closing dates | Location, ownership and duration |
| Foreign broker | Year-end positions, annual activity report, purchases, sales, transfers and acquisition records | Valuation, disposals, holding periods and cost history |
| Broker or bank | Gross dividends and interest, foreign withholding certificates | Foreign income and possible income-tax relief |
| Pension provider | Scheme rules, compulsory/voluntary status, annual value, contributions and distributions | Classification of the arrangement, not an assumed universal tax treatment |
| Foreign insurer | Policy, surrender-value statement, premiums, withdrawals and confirmation of any Italian tax treatment | Whether and how the policy is reportable and taxable |
| Foreign property | Deed, ownership rights, acquisition or succession documents, qualifying cadastral valuation | Appropriate IVIE valuation basis and ownership |
| Property manager or local authority | Rent statement, local tax assessments and proof of payment | Separate rental-income and foreign-credit analysis |
| Crypto exchange or self-custody records | Positions, transaction exports, transfer history, valuations and evidence of any stamp duty applied | Holdings, holding periods and separate crypto-tax analysis |
For a broker, request information about any Italian withholding or substitute tax actually applied. The reporting exception for assets entrusted to resident intermediaries depends on the statutory conditions, not simply on whether the group also has an Italian company. Keep the institution's written response.
If a provider cannot produce an annual average balance, ask for daily balance information or the complete movement history needed to reconstruct it. Preserve its reply and agree a documented calculation with your adviser. Do not invent an average from the opening and closing values alone.
Accounts closed, emptied or left dormant
An account that disappeared from your app in February may still matter for the tax year. Closure does not erase balances, interest or holding days before closure. Equally, a closed account is not automatically reportable when a statutory exception applies.
Get the closure confirmation, the final statement and records covering the period before closure. For a dormant account, retain the annual statement or written nil-balance confirmation. Include the account in the inventory you give your adviser so its treatment can be decided from evidence.
Investments, pensions and insurance
Investment accounts often mix cash, securities and income. Ask the broker to identify the components rather than treating its entire dashboard total as one current account. A report prepared for another country's return may use different cost-basis or currency conventions.
For listed products, retain the quoted year-end value or the value at the end of the holding period. For unlisted instruments, supply the issuer's valuation and available nominal, redemption or acquisition values. Let the adviser apply the valuation hierarchy instead of choosing the most convenient figure.
Foreign pension and insurance arrangements require classification. Send the contract and scheme rules as well as the balance: compulsory social-security rights, voluntary pension savings and redeemable investment policies are not interchangeable. A label such as “retirement account” does not by itself establish Italian exemption or liability.
Property and crypto need separate records
For foreign property, keep the deed even if you bought it many years before moving to Italy. For qualifying EU/EEA property, the relevant foreign cadastral value takes priority under the IVIE guidance; outside that framework, the documented acquisition cost and fallback market-value rules matter. Supply succession or gift documents where relevant.
Record purchases, sales, changes in ownership rights and use, and revised valuations. Special reporting rules exist for unchanged foreign property, but continuing IVIE obligations must still be checked. A home used as a main residence can have different treatment from a rental or holiday home; do not decide that from the word “home” alone.
For crypto, retain exchange exports and a transfer map covering movements between platforms and your own wallets. The tax on the value of crypto-assets is separate from IVAFE on financial products. Never give an adviser a wallet seed phrase or private key: transaction records and public addresses, where relevant, are the appropriate evidence.
Ownership, currencies and foreign tax: reconcile the details
Joint ownership requires both the total value and each person's documented share. The return instructions generally require each relevant holder to indicate the asset's full value and their percentage. Sending a halved statement without explaining the joint holding can lead to the percentage being applied twice.
Also disclose usufruct, bare ownership, beneficial interests, trusts and powers to move another person's assets. Monitoring can extend beyond the name printed on the account, but a mere corporate mandate is not automatically equivalent to personal beneficial ownership. Provide the mandate or ownership documents rather than guessing.
| Data point | Keep in the file | Mistake to avoid |
|---|
| Currency | Original-currency values and their dates | Converting everything at today's exchange rate |
| Financial holding period | Acquisition, transfer and disposal dates | Assuming every position was held for 365 days |
| Property holding period | Transfer deeds and dates | Applying a financial-asset day count to IVIE month rules |
| Joint holding | Full asset value and ownership percentage | Reducing the balance and applying the share a second time |
| Foreign tax | Assessment, legal description, year and payment receipt | Treating every overseas charge as creditable |
The RW/W instructions refer to official monthly average exchange rates for the relevant currency conversion. Preserve the unconverted records so the adviser can use the prescribed basis. A broker's euro summary can be useful, but retain its exchange-rate assumptions as well.
Separate the asset file from the income file. A year-end portfolio value does not report its dividends; a property's IVIE calculation does not settle the tax on rent. Provide gross income and foreign tax withheld, not merely the amount credited to your bank.
A foreign payment is not automatically creditable against IVIE or IVAFE. The legal nature of the foreign levy, the asset, applicable treaty and Italian limits must be checked. Eligible asset-tax credits cannot exceed the corresponding Italian tax. Income-tax credits are a separate analysis; the same foreign payment cannot be used twice.
For background on the taxes themselves, use the IVIE and IVAFE guide. This checklist focuses on the evidence needed to apply those rules to your holdings.
Printable document checklist
Use one folder for the tax year and an index with one row per account or asset. Mark an item “not applicable” only after checking it; an unexplained blank is difficult for your adviser to distinguish from a missing document.

Keep original statements and a working copy of any spreadsheet used to combine positions. If items are aggregated for the return, the underlying schedule must still explain what was included. Your folder should allow another person to reconcile the figures without access to your online banking.
When a provider sends revised statements, retain the replacement and mark the earlier version as superseded. Record why the figure changed. This prevents an adviser from combining an updated year-end value with an outdated gains schedule.
Illustrative example: four holdings, one organised file
Consider Alex, an Italian tax resident throughout 2025, preparing a 2026 return. This is an illustrative case, not a client story or a complete tax calculation.
Alex has a wholly owned foreign current account held all year, a foreign brokerage portfolio, a rented apartment abroad and a small crypto holding. The bank account averaged €6,400 and peaked at €19,000; the portfolio's year-end value was €48,000.
| Holding | What Alex supplies | What still needs deciding |
|---|
| Current account | Annual statement, average/peak figures, entity and country confirmation | Monitoring and fixed IVAFE, considering all other accounts |
| Brokerage portfolio | Position report, transaction history, dividends and withholding | Valuation, income treatment and any intermediary exemption |
| Rented apartment | Deed, valuation documents, rent statement and local tax receipt | IVIE base, property reporting and eligible tax credits |
| Crypto | Holdings statement, transaction export and wallet-transfer map | Monitoring, value tax and any taxable disposals |
The bank account's €19,000 peak exceeds the €15,000 monitoring exception. Its €6,400 average exceeds the fixed-IVAFE threshold, so under these assumptions the full-year, sole-owner bank-account tax is €34.20, not €12.80 obtained by multiplying €6,400 by 0.20%.
Nothing about those bank thresholds answers the separate brokerage, property or crypto questions. Nor does paying a foreign property levy establish that the entire amount can be credited in Italy. The documents allow the adviser to make those decisions without substituting assumptions for evidence.
Alex's inventory also includes a second account closed during the year, if one existed. It would not be omitted merely because the main bank statement no longer lists it. Its actual balance history and the applicable exceptions would determine its treatment.
If you want help reviewing the inventory and identifying missing evidence, request a foreign-asset tax review. You can use the checklist independently; a review should start with documents, not requests for access to your accounts.
Send the file securely and keep payment planning separate
Prefer your adviser's authenticated client portal or an agreed encrypted transfer. If an encrypted archive is used, send its password through a different channel. Confirm unexpected requests and recipient changes using contact details you already trust.
Never send bank passwords, PINs, one-time codes or wallet recovery phrases. An adviser needs evidence and appropriate authorisations, not unrestricted access to your accounts. Ask before redacting a document: unnecessary personal detail can be removed, but ownership, values, dates and identification needed for the return must remain legible.
Maintain a short missing-documents list. State what was requested, from whom, when, and whether an alternative statement is available. A screenshot or self-prepared schedule may help reconstruct information, but it is not automatically an equivalent replacement for an institution-issued certificate.
Finally, distinguish filing from paying. Foreign-asset taxes, income taxes and freelance contributions have different bases and may create different balances or advances. Our first two years of freelance taxes guide explains the cash-flow distinction. Its linked freelance planner does not calculate IVIE, IVAFE, crypto tax or foreign investment income.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I report a foreign bank account containing only a few hundred euros?
A small closing balance does not decide the answer. Check the maximum aggregate value of foreign deposits and bank accounts during the year and whether IVAFE is due. The €15,000 monitoring exception and €5,000 average-balance test perform different jobs. Keep the statements needed to apply both.
Is Quadro W the same as Quadro RW?
They apply the relevant foreign-asset rules within different returns. Quadro W belongs to the 730; Quadro RW belongs to Redditi PF. The 730 instructions refer to RW for the underlying information. Your adviser should confirm which return you may or must use before preparing the sections.
What happens when my average bank balance exceeds €5,000?
For an individual's qualifying foreign current accounts or savings books, fixed IVAFE can become payable: €34.20 per account for a full year and full ownership, adjusted as required. The threshold is tested across relevant accounts at the same intermediary, considering joint shares. It does not trigger a switch to 0.20%.
Which documents do I need from a foreign broker?
Request annual positions, transaction and transfer records, acquisition history, dividends, interest and foreign withholding. Keep the original currencies and dates. Also establish the intermediary's legal entity and any Italian tax treatment. A broker's report for another country's tax system may not contain everything needed for Italy.
Do I need statements for an account closed during the year?
Yes, collect them for the assessment. Closing an account does not remove reporting or tax obligations that arose while it was held, although applicable exemptions still matter. Ask for the closure date, final statement, average balance and movement history rather than relying on the account's absence from today's dashboard.
Are all foreign retirement accounts taxable in the same way?
No. Compulsory pension rights, voluntary pension arrangements and investment products can receive different treatment. Give your adviser the scheme rules, contributions, distributions and annual values. Whether a product is reportable or subject to IVAFE cannot safely be decided from its overseas name or tax label alone.
Can I always deduct foreign property tax from IVIE?
No. Supply the assessment and proof of payment so the levy can be classified and any treaty and credit limits checked. Eligible credits are capped at the relevant Italian tax. Local service charges and income taxes are not automatically interchangeable with a patrimonial tax on the asset.
Is it safe to send my accountant login details?
Do not send passwords, PINs, one-time codes, seed phrases or private keys. Use statements, appropriate formal authorisations and an agreed secure transfer channel. Keep original records, verify the recipient and clarify any request that appears to require unrestricted access to a bank or investment account.
